How do you believe the HRM role can be optimized for shaping organizational and employee behavior?

Reflective Paper

The Reflective Paper should demonstrate understanding of the reading assignments as well as the implications of new knowledge. The eight-page paper should integrate readings and class discussions into work and life experience. It may include explanation and examples from previous experience as well as implications for future application.

The purpose of the Reflective Paper is for you to culminate the learning achieved in the course by describing your understanding and application of knowledge in the field of human resource management.

Focus of the Reflective Paper

The primary function of human resource management is to increase the effectiveness and contribution of employees in the attainment of organizational goals and objectives. Consider all the areas of HRM that have been discussed in class:

  • EEO and Affirmative Action,
  • Human resources planning, recruitment, and selection,
  • Human resources development,
  • Compensation and benefits,
  • Safety and Health, and
  • Employee and labor relations.

Submit a Reflective Paper in which you explain how these aspects work together to perform that primary function. Are any aspects more important than the others? Why or why not? How do you believe the HRM role can be optimized for shaping organizational and employee behavior?

The Reflective Paper must: (a) identify the main issues in the chosen area, (b) demonstrate new learning that has occurred, (c) include class activities or incidents that facilitated learning and understanding, (d) identify specific current and/or future applications and relevance to your workplace, and (e) reflect the potential impact to your future career plans or even in your personal life at home. The emphasis of the Reflective Paper should be on parts ‘d’ and ‘e,’ and on the application of new learning. Explore, in depth, the benefits of the new learning and understanding that has taken place.

Writing the Reflective Paper

The Reflective Paper:

  • Must be to eight double-spaced pages in length, excluding the cover page and reference page, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in your approved style guide.

Does the United States have a comparative advantage in wingdings?

PROJECT DESCRIPTION—PART 2 (4.0 HOURS) Project Introduction: Suppose that the U.S. currently buys and produces wingdings, a fictitious economic good. The U.S. faces the world price, and domestic suppliers sell as many wingdings as possible at the world price. Now, the government succumbs to lobbying by wingding producers and imposes a protective tariff on wingdings amounting to $2 per wingding. The graph below represents this situation. ES2550: Project Page 3 World Price World Price + Tariff U.S. Supply U.S. Demand Price Quantity (millions of pounds) 6 1 2 1 6 1 8 2 6 6 8 1 0 4 Market for Wingdings Part 1: Answer the following questions. Use formulas and show calculations as well as final answers. a. Does the United States have a comparative advantage in wingdings? Explain. b. Discuss the effect of the tariff on the number of imports. c. How did the imposition of the tariff change consumer surplus? d. How did the imposition of the tariff change producer surplus? e. What is the overall result of the tariff in terms of welfare? Part 2: Allowing free trade between countries can be beneficial, but it also imposes costs. Use the ITT Tech Virtual Library to research the costs and benefits of allowing free trade. Discuss aspects of free trade that some may consider unfair. For example: a. Distribution of costs and benefits of free trade. In other words, does everyone share in the gains and the costs equally? b. Competing with different labor restrictions (or lack thereof), such as slave or child labor. ES2550: Project Page 4 c. Differences in environmental standards. Part 3: Research trade between the United States and another country in any one of the following areas: customer support services, garments, medical services, or technical products. Discuss the following points: a. How is this trade arrangement beneficial? Explain. b. Are there any aspects of this trade arrangement that may be considered unfair, i.e. labor conditions or environmental conditions? c. Discuss a possible solution for minimizing harms mentioned in part b. Course Objectives Tested: 1. Explain key microeconomic terminology. 3. Create and use economic graphs and numerical models to analyze and solve microeconomic problems. 4. Explain the costs and benefits of international trade, including calculation of gains from trade. 7. Compare and contrast optimal pricing and output decisions in various market structures. 8. Apply supply and demand theory to both product and factor markets.

Explain how technology has advanced each of their businesses, leading to growth.

Assignment 2: Innovation and Communication Presentation

Listed below are the names of some of the world’s top technology-related innovators. They have also been called leaders, entrepreneurs, disrupters, or good old-fashioned trouble-makers. They have gone against the odds, rattling stale industries to build new ones. Recognize their names? Not likely, though you may instantly recognize their product, technology, or scientific inventions, which have made headlines. However, their success would not be possible without the effective management of team members. For this assignment, you are required to choose two people from the list and create a PowerPoint presentation.

First, choose two leaders from the list below:

  • Caleb Chung
  • Cory Booker
  • Craig Venter
  • Dan Olschwang
  • Diane Greene
  • Hjalmar Winbladh
  • Jeremy Stoppelman
  • Mark Gorton
  • Russell Simmons
  • Sunil Shaunak

Now, respond to the following:

  • Utilize your research and identify the methods these innovators or leaders are using to communicate through technology in an effort to remain relevant in their industries.
  • Explain how technology has advanced each of their businesses, leading to growth.
  • Determine if innovative products, such as Google X, iWatch, or the new Cardboard Bike, can be linked to transformational or transactional leadership. Defend your position.
  • Self-managed teams are often used to hide inventions from public view. Utilizing your research, identify ways managers and project leaders working under constraints can accomplish this.

Develop a 4–6-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Include detailed speaker notes in your presentation. Utilize at least two scholarly sources (in addition to your textbook) to complete your research, referencing sources within the text and at the end in a reference list. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.ppt.

Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship through accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Assemble issues and defining the bargaining mix.

Read the Facts:

Nikki is the manager of a small-midsize call center that handles orders for a national chain of floral shops, InBloom Flowers.  She recently implemented a policy change based on the needs of InBloom.  Previously, employees worked from 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday.  Due to an increase in orders, InBloom requested that the call center expand its hours and add Saturdays (Saturdays seem to be a high need day).  In order to fulfill this request, Nikki changed the hours to 7:00 am-6:00 pm Monday through Friday, and to 8:00 am-4:00 pm on Saturdays.  This change means that employees will be given a new schedule based on their seniority.  Those with the most seniority were allowed to pick their shift first.  Below are the shift options

A: 7:00 am-3:00 pm M-F

B: 10:00am-6:00pm M-F

C: 7:00am-3:00 pm Tuesday-Saturday (8:00-4:00pm on Saturdays)

D: 10:00am-6:00 pm Tuesday-Saturday (8:00-4:00pm on Saturdays)

Obviously, those with seniority were able to pick their ideal shift while those with less seniority were left with less options. One of those who felt that she received a less than ideal shift was Michelle.  Even though she has worked for the call center for over two years and is a stellar employee, because of the longevity and lack of turnover in the call center, she ranked around the bottom 20% for picking a shift.  Michelle ended up with Shift D: 10:00am-6:00 pm Tuesday-Saturday (8:00-4:00pm on Saturdays).  Furious with this shift assignment she wants to meet with Nikki and demand that she get a shift that better fits her home life responsibilities. Michelle is a single mom and has an ideal daycare provider who only has hours from 8:30-5:30 Monday through Friday.

Obviously, Michelle is upset and would like to negotiate a better shift. From the materials this week, we learned the importance of strategizing and planning for a negotiation. Even before she steps foot into Nikki’s office, actions need to be taken in order for the negotiation to start off on the right foot. For this part of the project you will be advising Michelle on how to plan for the negotiation with Nikki. In a 3-4 page paper (you may go longer depending on the length and level of detail in your plan), address the following:

  1. Select and support whether Michelle should take an integrative of distributive approach to the negotiation. Be sure to fully define both and argue the pros and cons of each prior to making a selection.
  2. Once an approach is selected, the next step is to formulate a plan. A solid foundation to a good negotiation involves creating an effective plan. For this section, create a plan for Michelle in which you address the following points:
    • Define the issues.
    • Assemble issues and defining the bargaining mix.
    • Define the interests of both parties
    • Define the resistance points.
    • Define Michelle’s alternatives and select a BATNA.
    • Define Michelle’s objectives (targets) and opening bids (where to start).
    • Assess constituents and the social context in which the negotiation will occur.
    • Analyze the other party.
    • Plan the issue presentation and defense.
    • Define protocol-where and when the negotiation will occur, who will be there, what the agenda will be, and so on.

Evaluate practices and consequences of both companies as related to CSR.

Assignment 2: Discussion—Planet, People, Profit—Global Perspective

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gained in importance over the last decade. Companies are not only evaluated based on their financials, but also based on their activities related to the society in which they operate and the consequences of their operations on the environment.

Using the Argosy University online library resources, select an MNC that was recently recognized for its high CSR standards and practices, and an MNC recently involved in a social, environmental, or ethical dispute.

Next, do the following:

  • Describe the practices of the MNC recognized for high CSR standards.
  • Contrast its practices with those of the company that was identified as having poor CSR practices.
  • Evaluate practices and consequences of both companies as related to CSR.

Consumer Safety: Product Dumping

Project #1

Case Study: Consumer Safety: Product Dumping

Once the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) prohibits the sale of a particular product in the United States, a manufacturer can no longer sell the product to U.S. wholesalers or retailers. However, the product can be sold in other countries that have not prohibited its sale. The same is true of other countries’ sales to the United States. For example, Great Britain outlawed the sale of the prescription sleeping pill, Halcion, but sales of the drug continue in the U.S. The British medical community reached conclusions regarding the pill’s safety that differed from the conclusions reached by the medical community and the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. Some researchers who conducted studies on the drug in the U.S. simply concluded that stronger warning labels were needed.

The CPSC outlawed the sale of three-wheeled all-terrain cycles in the U.S. in 1988. While some manufacturers had already turned to four-wheel models, other manufacturers still had inventories of three-wheel cycles. Testimony on the cycles ranged from contentions that the vehicles themselves were inherently dangerous, to arguments that the vehicles were safe but drivers were too young, too inexperienced, and more inclined to take risks. Still, the three-wheeled vehicle can be sold outside the U.S. For many companies, chaos follows a product recall because inventory of the recalled product may be high. Often, firms must decide whether to “dump” the product in other countries or take a write-off that could damage earnings, stock prices, and employment stability.

If you were a manufacturer holding substantial inventory of a product that has been outlawed in the U.S., would you have any ethical concerns about selling the product in countries that do not [yet] prohibit its sale? To what extent will your decision be affected by the level of the write- down in income you must take.

PAPERS: The papers will be a moral evaluation of cases. It should be short, about 5 pages, double spaced, APA or MLA format acceptable.

It is imperative that you CITE. This is the most important aspect of writing a paper. If you paraphrase from a book or journal article, you need to give me the citation from where you found the idea. If you quote, once again I need a citation. Similarly if you are simply alluding to a particular idea, I need a citation. Any paper not citing De George properly gets as the highest grade a B.

I need a Bibliography at the end of the paper. Please use Internet resources as a last resource, and not as a main source of information. The main sources of information should be a) your book, b) books or journal articles related to the topic at hand, c) newspaper or magazine articles, and d) as a last resort, internet resources. I do not want a paper to use primarily and only Internet resources. If the paper only uses Internet resources, it will lead to a grade of 0.

1) The paper ought to begin first with explaining the case at hand:
a) It has to establish what is being asked of the agent to do
b) Who is affected?
c) What is the problem?
d) In what ways is this morally problematic?
e) What are possible future consequences of not doing the right act?

2) The paper ought to then provide a brief explanation of each of the three major theories we have looked at and how each attempts to guide one’s moral actions:

  1. a)  Utilitarianism and the Principle of Utility
  2. b)  Deontology and the Universalizability Principle, or the Dignity of Persons Principle, or the

Kingdom of Ends Principle (pick one principle and explain instead of explaining all three)

  3. c)  Virtue and the right formation of Character

Make sure that you attend at least but not limited to the following concepts in explaining Section 2:

  1. a)  Utility
  2. b)  Justice
  3. c)  Consequences
  4. d)  Rationality/Universalizibility/Kingdom of Ends/

    a. Non-contradiction b. Consistency
    c. Coherency

  5. e)  Reasonableness/Dignity of Persons
  6. f)  Rights/duties/Perfect/Imperfect/Positive/Negative
  7. g)  Justice
  8. h)  Moral and Intellectual Virtues
  9. i)  Character
  10. j)  Moral Intuitions

3) Finally: What do you think is the right act? What ought the agent do in this case?
a) You can pick from any of the theories above or borrow parts from all, or simply use the

theory you think provides the best answer.
b) Be sure to tell me specifically why you think this is the morally permissible outcome and

what you think the consequences will be to having picked that act as the right act.

Make sure that you explain every possible detail how you arrived at your solution. DO NOT start with a solution already in mind; that will cloud your judgment. Make sure you let the theory guide you properly.

I know that I am asking you to do many things at once in only 5-6 pages. That means that you have to really think about what needs to be stated carefully and to the point. Please no at length quotes.

Integrate the elements of reasoning and intellectual standards in your writing to show an understanding of the material behind your personal example.

Situational Reactions

Read the following three situations. Describe what you would do in EACH situation. Integrate the elements of reasoning and intellectual standards in your writing to show an understanding of the material behind your personal example.

Your essay should be 500-600 words in length and include the use of at least two (2) elements of reasoning and two (2) intellectual standards for EACH of the three (3) scenarios you will be discussing.

Do not worry about your answers being right or wrong – your work will be evaluated on its connection to the material – not the behavior you would engage in if you found yourself in these situations.

Scenario A:You are deployed in a country. A raid went wrong, and your squad opened fire on several innocent people. Your commander asks you and the rest of the squad to make it look like they opened fire up on you first. How would you respond?

Scenario B:As a police officer, you pull someone over. After searching their vehicle, you confiscate several ounces of marijuana. The computer system is down so you cannot chronicle this bust. Your partner tells you that his wife is sick and he could really use that marijuana at home for medicinal purposes to help her with her pain. How would you respond to your partner?

Scenario C:As a parent, your child has a first year teacher who gives ridiculously hard assignments. Your kid has a four year scholarship waiting for him if he can pass this last course – even with a C. The last assignment is an assignment that you did your graduate work on – so you know there’s no way a high schooler should be expected to do this assignment – but if your child fails this assignment, they would lose a four year scholarship. Do you actively help them complete the assignment – or let them do it themselves – knowing they can’t do the assignment themselves and the assignment is likely to be poor because it was an inappropriately assigned paper.
