Proverbs are an essential component to socialization across cultures (Rahill, et al., 2011). They are used to transmit social and religious values, as well as to reinforce knowledge and behavior that are essential to a culture’s existence and identity. For this assignment, students are provided an initial sample of proverbs from around the globe, related to various themes, including but not limited to: prejudice, virtue, discrimination, social progress, the commonality of persons across different groups and others. 

Paper must be 2-3 pages typed, 1-inch margins, 12 pt. Time New Roman font, College-level writing, MLA format

Guidelines:

1. The task is to research and identify similar proverbs from across cultures that might be considered to hold very divergent sociocultural and religious perspectives (Example: Christian and Muslim; Mormons and Hindus, etc); 

2. Use the internet, books, journal articles as well as live interviews of “different” students and faculty members from across the campus and in their neighborhoods, to discover proverbs from various cultures that transmit sociocultural and religious values; 

3. Discuss the common elements which you have discovered in the proverbs from diverse cultures, the similarities and differences to proverbs used in their own socialization process and life experience, the relevance of the proverbs they have researched to the social work values, “importance of human relationships” and “social justice; 

4. Discuss the extent to which the proverbs you discovered may oppose your own cultural values, and/or may marginalize or alienate clients from the diverse backgrounds reflected in your table of proverbs; 

5. Discuss how this exercise impacts your development of culturally proficient skills and your ability to utilize the strengths of cultural resources in your roles as an advocacy broker and as a promoter of human rights and social justice. 

~Some background about my culture is that I’m half Iranian  and Afghani and my family is Muslim but I’m a Buddhist.

	Prepare: Prior to beginning your initial post, read the poems “We Real Cool” and “My Papa’s Waltz” in your textbook. You are also required to listen to “We Real Cool” and “My Papa’s Waltz” before completing this discussion. These clips demonstrate the importance of performance, rhythm, and musicality in the poetic form.
	Reflect: Poetry is a literary form that can offer readers a different experience based on whether the poem is read silently, read aloud, or simply listened to when read by someone else. For example, you might hear a certain rhythm or change of pace that you might not catch when simply reading the poem silently to yourself. For this week’s discussion, you read and listened to poetry. If you didn’t the first time, read and listen with careful eyes and ears so you can respond thoughtfully to the two parts of the discussion this week.
	Write: Part One – Answer the following questions about one of the poems based on your readingof them: Identify the theme of the poem. How do you know this is the theme? Define the poetic devices (e.g., rhythm, figurative language, etc.) used in the poem. Offer at least two examples. Analyze how these poetic devices contribute to the development of the poem’s message. Support your ideas with textual details and analyses. Part Two – Describe your listening experience of the same poem you wrote about above. If you are unable to listen to these poems due to an auditory impairment, please reach out to your instructor for an alternative prompt for this discussion. Respond to at least two of the following questions: How did hearing the poem recited aloud compare to a silent reading of it? Did the performance highlight certain words or phrases that were not as apparent in a silent reading? Did the pace change and, if so, how did it change your understanding of the poem? Did words have different connotations when spoken aloud, and, if so, what kind(s) of connotation did you associate with the poem? In this assignment you will use the skills learned in class to critically evaluate evidence and write a research paper. Please research a topic from the list below to write your research paper. This assignment is three parts. The first part is to research a topic and write a paper using the evidence you found. And the second part is to critique a classmate’s written assignment and receive feedback on yours. You will then revise your research paper using the feedback you get from your classmate.

Part 1 Annotated Bibliography

1. Please find at least 3 sources for your research topic and evaluate their credibility.
2. These must come from: reputable news sources and scientific journal articles.
3. Turn in a brief paragraph (typed, single spaced) for each article describing the material and why you think it is or is not credible and if you will use it.
4. If it is credible, why would you or wouldn’t you use this source?

Part 2 Research Paper

1. Write a 4-5 page, double-spaced research paper. Use 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins.
2. Include a minimum of 5 in-text citations, at least 2 of which, must come from a scientific journal article. Science, Nature, Ecology, American Naturalist, Geoscience, Conservation Biology, TRENDS in Ecology and Evolution, and Global Environmental Change are good examples and there are many, many more. If you have any questions about what makes a legitimate scientific publication, please email your instructor.
3. Reminder: These must come from: reputable news sources, books and scientific journal articles (2 min). Do not include youtube videos, blogs, Wikipedia or other online sources.
4. Include a literature cited section at the end of your paper (minimum 5 sources).
