Using gestures while reading helps children to increase their vocabulary skills. Think back to a nursery rhyme from your childhood that included gestures, such as “The Wheels on the Bus.” How do you think the gestures helped you to understand the meaning of the individual words in the song? How did they help you to understand the song as a whole? How does reflecting on this idea influence your beliefs about the importance of using gestures when teaching vocabulary to young learners?
