With the increasing cultural and religious diversity to be safe health services need to be culturally appropriate. There has been a proven link between low cultural competence in health care practice and poor quality health outcomes. When admitting a young adult of the Hindu faith, it is important to be aware of their beliefs and practices as Hinduism allows complete freedom of individuals to practice his or her religion as they choose. In the traditional Hindu faith, family, especially the elders play a strong role in healthcare decisions. It is also important to remember that Hindu culture uses herbal medicinal practices, with this knowledge, a complete list of medications and supplements is necessary. Hindus also may want to use alternative medicine such as Ayurveda and homeopathy and feel our culture over medicates, especially with antibiotics. They tend to be modest and may prefer to be examined by a healthcare provider of the same sex and may request a family member be present.

A resource available in the Houston area is the Hindus of greater Houston. The Hindu faith reinforces love and the organizations goal is to carry the Hindu values forward and make this world a better place for all.
