Directions

In the Assignment 01, you considered 3 possible topics for the research paper you’ll submit at the end of this course. Today, your challenge is to narrow that list down to just 1 topic, and then to convince your professor that it’s a good one.

But how will you do that? The best research topics are specific, as this video from ProQuest Research Companion explains. Once you have (a) chosen and (b) narrowed your topic, propose it to your instructor.

What to Submit for this Assignment

Your proposal must include:

The original, broad topic with which you started.

The narrower, more specific topic your paper will consider.

Ethical questions and issues this topic raises.

Initial questions you have about this topic.

Your proposal should be 8-10 sentences, formatted in APA style, and use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

 

Introductory Speech Outline

Overview

Strong oral communication skills will be valuable to you  throughout your academic journey. They are in high demand by many  employers. Creating an outline is critical to your success in crafting  an effective speech.

For this assignment, you will create an outline. The speech based on your outline is due next week. 

Instructions

1. Select either Topic A or Topic B for your introductory speech.        
   • Topic A: Elevator Pitch. Deliver an elevator pitch that  describes your professional background and experience for a potential  employer during a job interview.
   • Topic B: Dream Career. Discuss your dream career.
2. Create an outline or speaking notes in Microsoft Word.        
   • Download the Sample Outline [DOCX], which provides guidance for the structure of an outline.
   • Focus your speech on 2–3 main points so you’ll stay within the 2-minute time limit.
3. Submit the completed outline in a Microsoft Word document.

Requirements

Your assignment will be graded according to the following criteria:

• The outline is complete and on topic.
• The outline provides solid flow for the speech.
• The outline is clear and free from spelling and grammar issues.

Question 1: 

Imagine you are head of the HR department and you have been asked to review five applicants for the sales clerk position at your company. During the interview process, you learn the following information about each applicant:

The Applicants

Alice

Alice has 10 years of experience in sales, but can be easily distracted. She will not work on commission and cannot work weekends. She can be a little obstinate, but has an excellent job history. She also requires ADA accommodations, due to an injury sustained during military service.

Mary

Mary has one year’s experience, but is very congenial and loves working with people. Her work schedule is very flexible, but she can become a little stressed at times and has been known for having to quietly leave and regroup for a short time. Mary also considers herself an advocate for human rights, with an emphasis on race relations, and is known to voice her opinions related to racial injustice to others.

James

James has seven years’ experience, a master’s degree in business, aspirations of owning his company in the near future, and is very religious. He is known to make biblical references often, encourages others to attend his church, and has requested 80 hours in advance to attend religious conferences within the next six months.

Sam

Sam has six years’ experience, and is willing to work all shifts. Sam is transgender, prefers gender-neutral pronouns (they/them), and is looking for a new job, due to workplace bullying at a previous place of employment.

Justin

Justin has five years’ experience, is a hard worker, flexible, and has a great job history. Justin is also someone that you met in college, dated briefly, and have not seen in a few years.

Candidate Selection

Decide which candidate would be the right fit for the sales clerk position.

• Describe the thought process that led to your decision and your reasons for not selecting one of the other candidates.
• Justify your choice, including all of the considerations or factors that influenced your selection.

Question 2

• Speculate on three reasons why employees leave an organization and three reasons why employees stay.
• Outline a retention strategy that HR could use to reduce the number of employees who leave an organization for the three reasons you identified.
  • Be intentional or specific with your strategy so you can measure the desire outcome. For example, an employee might leave an organization because their manager does not communicate with them about their job performance. Your retention strategy might be to implement a performance measurement process that HR could use to track monthly or quarterly performance conversations between managers and employees as a way to close the communication gap.

 The purpose of your Research Paper should be to provide an overview of a course-related topic of your choice. Include a brief history of the topic, the reason why it is relevant to the field of human resources (and staffing in particular), and detail current best practices as related to the topic. You may also wish to describe any relevant professional experiences related to your topic. Your research topic must relate to training and development.  

Your paper should be 5-7 pages in length (not including reference pages or title page) and double-spaced. Use APA format and a 12 point font. Longer or shorter papers will be accepted as long as writing is both concise and complete. Each paper should include an APA style reference list. Refer to the book A Writer’s Reference for information on formatting in APA style. Your paper will be graded based on the following topic areas: Content, Organization and Clarity, Creativity and Interest, and Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation. Please make sure to proofread your paper before submitting it.
