Discussion 03: Conflict of Responsibility

HA3300D – Healthcare Policy and Ethics

Discussion 03: Conflict of Responsibility

Suppose you are the healthcare manager in a hospital oncology (cancer) unit. Every day, you see patients and families suffer a great deal because of cancer. One day, you learn that one of the oncologists is seeing a larger number of patients go into remission. Upon further investigation, you learn that he is using medication and treatment methods not yet approved by the American Medical Association. You find out that other countries are using the treatment effectively, but most in the medical community are skeptical because it is a non-traditional approach to treating cancer.

You and the physician are the only ones who understand the medical and legal implications: that the patient will die if he stops, but the hospital could be sued for malpractice if you continue to offer him this treatment. The doctor accepts the risk and promises not to tell anyone if you do not. He goes on to say he will stop once he is finished treating a current patient who will surely die if he stops treatment.

He further explains that the use of such a tool may hinder a project rather than move it forward. Moreover, Kevin says that schedules and project timelines are a hindrance as well. How would you respond? Discuss how you would support or refute Kevin’s points of view.

Path-goal theory focuses on the ability of leaders to motivate followers to achieve success. The theory built upon the foundation of expectancy theory that states followers will be motivated when they are confident that they can be successful in achieving the goal. However, there have been many instances related to social movements as far back as the 1700s when followers have been motivated against many odds and barriers with a low likelihood of success. When you look at social movements like the Abolition Movement, Women’s Rights Movement, Labor Movements, Civil Rights Movement, and even Occupy Wall Street, followers were highly motivated, and the likelihood of success was not evident.

  • Do you think these social movements contradict the path-goal theory? Justify your  answer.
  • Formulate your own theory as to how these movements are able to motivate so many followers. Support your theory with scholarly research.
  • Why do you think so many of these movements are called “leaderless” movements?

If you have little knowledge of our experience with social movements, please read the Unit Four Learning Material article by Nepstad & Bob, “When Do Leaders Matter? Hypotheses on Leadership Dynamics in Social Movements,” Mobilization, 2006
